Summer is finally here and we are excited to have three mission teams join us this summer. These teams will be helping serve our city, build relationships, and get the word out about the new church. One team is from Texas and is coming June 19-21. We also have a team from California and one from North Carolina on July 22-26. Please be in prayer for these teams as they are here serving and ministering to the people of New York. If your family or church is interested in coming to NYC on a mission trip, please let me know!
We are starting to build a launch team that will help us get started well. These men and women will help us as we make plans and get to know the people in our area. Please pray that God will send the right people to be on our team. We would like to have a good, solid base of people committed to our church plant before we officially launch. We are specifically looking for people who can commit for 6 months to 1 year. If you are interested in joining our launch team, please let me know!
Once we move to our new neighborhood at the end of July, our plan is to begin holding weekly Bible studies in our home. These will be open to anyone in the community and we will invite believers and non-believers alike. Our prayer is that these Bible studies will help us meet new people and help them experience authentic community. As the Bible studies grow, we will look to begin meeting corporately once a month. Our goal is to start this by December, 2013. Once we have a good core of people, we will then begin holding weekly church services. Our goal is to start this on Easter of 2014. Lord willing, we plan to have a monthly service on the following dates:
- December 22
- January 26
- February 23
- March 23
If you, your church, or your family would like to help with any of our monthly services, please let me know! Even if you do not live in the New York area, we could still use help on these dates with things such as set-up/take-down, greeting, hospitality, etc. If you will be in NYC on any of these dates or would like to plan a trip to help, let’s talk! If you can’t come on those dates but would still like to help, you can still come. We will need help passing out information and inviting people to come any date during these months. If this is something you are interested in, please let me know.
Although we’ve felt the challenges of living in the city, we’ve also had a lot of fun! My brother came to visit for a few days. It was great getting to see him and the girls had fun with him. A couple of weeks ago we made a spontaneous trip. We have been wanting to take the girls to see a broadway show and one morning decided to go ahead and take them to see Annie the Musical. We ended up getting rush tickets on the front row. It was like they were singing to us. We could see their facial expressions and they would make eye contact with us from time to time. This was the girls’ first show and they were amazed!
We have a huge answer to prayer! Emily got a seat at in a pre-k class in Kensington! When we realistically looked at the odds we were doubtful that she would get into any class. In NYC pre-k seats are very hard to come by. Demand far exceeds supply, and you have to apply at several different schools and hope you get a seat. But they use a priority system to award seats and we were last on most of the priorities. But God is good and He will always make a way. So, we are praising Him for allowing her to go this year. Please pray that she will get into a good class with a good teacher and that she can have a wonderful year. Emily is doing great learning all her letters and numbers and we are very proud of her.
Kayla’s soccer season has almost come to an end, and it has been a great experience. It was great to spend time in the area we are moving to and meeting people from the neighborhood. Kayla made several new friends and we got to know some of the parents as well. She is continuing to excel in school and she is learning what it means to be a missionary. Every night she prays for one child in her class, moving down the rows. She started a prayer journal the other day and in one entry wrote “that she would have mercy in you (Jesus) and the strength to tell people about You.” Please continue to pray for Kayla, especially that we will be able to find an apartment in a good school zone and that she will get a good class.

- Pray that God will provide a good meeting location.
- Pray that we will be able to find an affordable apartment and that we will acclamate quickly.
- Pray that we will be able to quickly make good connections with people in the community and that we can be bold and creative in ways to engage with them.
